Alla grande. La prima ondata di conferme del Rototom Sunsplash 2020 lancia 23 artisti, che attestano la nostra scommessa di unire stili di diverse parti del pianeta e continuare a consolidare la sua eclettica comunità attorno al genere giamaicano. Toots & The Maytals, Barrington Levy, Julian Marley assieme a The Uprising, Protoje & The Indiggnation e Natiruts guidano questa potente e intercontinentale premiere del programma.

Dalla Giamaica a Cuba, al Brasile, Australia, Giappone, Regno Unito, Italia, Francia e Spagna. Dal roots allo ska, la dancehall, il rap e l’afrobeat. Perché tutto conta. Decolla il Rototom Sunsplash 2020: Dal 16 al 22 agosto 2020 e con il titolo di questo 27º anniversario, We can change the world (Possiamo cambiare il mondo), ci vediamo a Benicàssim.

Veterani, giovani promesse e leggende con la Giamaica come origine, profilano la proposta degli headliner per questo 27º sbarco. Dall’isola caraibica arrivano i leggendari Toots & The Maytals, che rappresenteranno uno dei momenti culminanti del Rototom 2020. Si unisce all’elenco anche il giamaicano e precursore della dancehall Barrington Levy, con la sua voce e il suo stile inconfondibile; e Julian Marley (assieme a The Uprising), figlio della leggenda giamaicana Bob Marley, la cui capacità di trasformare in musica un sapore roots unico attrae ai fanatici del reggae di tutte le età.

Ad ampliare questo primo antipasto di artisti giamaicani è Protoje, uno dei padri fondatori del “Reggae Revival”, che porterà al Rototom il suo stile caratteristico di testi mordaci su temi sociali e tematica rasta assieme alla sua band The Indiggnation. Un circolo che chiuderà il collettivo reggae acustico giamaicano Inna de Yard, formato da Winston McAnuff, Keith&Tex, Kiddus I, Var (Pentateuch), Steve Newland (Rootz Underground) e Kush (Uprising Roots); e la voce mistica di Clinton Fearon  (ex cantante dei Gladiators), che ha celebrato da poco i suoi 50 anni di carriera musicale.

Il viaggio continua con Natiruts, la band reggae di produzione propria più conosciuta in Brasile. Il suo ultimo lavoro, I Love (2018) vanta collaborazioni speciali di leggende come quella dei giamaicani Morgan Heritage e il padrino della musica popolare brasiliana Gilberto Gil. Il 2020 coinciderà con il suo debutto a Benicàssim.

La ricchezza dei paesi di provenienza che alimenta il programma musicale si amplifica con il cantante reggae francese nato a Martinica Yaniss Odua, una vera stella, nella sua caraibica isola e in Francia, che ritorna a Benicàssim con la sua potente performance assieme a Artikal Band; e con Nattali Rize dall’Australia, che pubblicherà il nuovo album il prossimo maggio dopo il suo debutto di successo: Rebel Frequency (2017). A tutto questo si aggiunge La Dame Blanche, il progetto della cantante, flautista e percussionista cubana Yaite Ramos, erede delle cantanti della rumba afrocubana.

Il reggae spagnolo atterra sul Rototom Sunsplash 2020 con Morodo, un vero esponente della scena nazionale con alle spalle 20 anni di carriera e che attuerà assieme alla sua banda, Okumé Lions; e con la formazione aragonese Jahsta che celebra il suo 25º anniversario, accompagnata da Conscious Vibes Band e il suo cocktail reggae con radici di dancehall e rap.

Dal Regno Unito si unisce a questo 27º anniversario la band londinese di ska e reggae The Dualers. Dalle isole britanniche arriva anche la cantante di ascendenza giamaicana Carrol Thompson; l’artista dub, reggae, ska e soul Captain Accident, direttamente da Cardiff, e un altro referente dello ska come Mark Foggo.

La scena statunitense sarà rappresentata dal quartetto di reggae-rock del Massachusetts Soul Rebel Project, alla quale si unisce la voce versatile statunitense di origine giamaicana Mighty Mystic.

Nel frattempo, dopo un nuovo lungo viaggio per l’Europa, irrompe il trombonista milanese Mr T-Bone, uno dei principali esponenti della scena internazionale contemporanea di ska e reggae.

La già ampia fila di conferme si nutre anche di nuovi nomi provenienti dalla Giamaica, come il talentuoso cantante reggae Droop Lion, che ci ha già fatto visita come voce dei leggendari Gladiators e la giovane artista SumeRR, che porterà in scena il suo dolce e allo stesso tempo potente ritmo reggae dal sapore vintage assieme alla canaria One Xe Band.

Per ultimo, dal circuito di sound system di musica ska e “oldies” arrivano i giapponesi Rock a Shacka ft Masa & Ash e l’mc di Tighten Up Crew, Champian.
