Morto di sfruttamento, morto di razzismo: la filiera che uccide in silenzio.
Paul Neeraj, bracciante di 36 anni di cui non esiste nemmeno una foto, è morto il 24 aprile 2026 dopo due settimane di agonia. Una vita cancellata senza lasciare traccia, come se non fosse mai esistito.
Nella notte tra il 10 e l’11 aprile è stato scaricato davanti al pronto soccorso dell’Ospedale Ruggi di Salerno in condizioni disperate, incosciente, con entrambe le gambe completamente nere per la cancrena. Abbandonato come un rifiuto umano, senza nome, senza storia, senza dignità.
Per due settimane ha lottato tra la vita e la morte, sottoposto a sedute in camera iperbarica nel reparto di malattie infettive. I medici hanno provato a salvarlo, ma il suo corpo era già stato devastato, infezione diffusa, fegato compromesso, organi interni distrutti. Le gambe non erano più salvabili. Secondo i sanitari, il quadro clinico è compatibile con un’esposizione prolungata e diretta a sostanze chimiche tossiche senza alcuna protezione.
Le sue gambe annerite non sono solo un dettaglio medico, sono la prova materiale di un sistema di sfruttamento feroce. Neeraj lavorava nella Piana del Sele, uno dei cuori dell’agroalimentare italiano, dove si produce fino al 90% delle insalate imbustate del Paese. Qui i braccianti stranieri, in particolare indiani, vengono impiegati negli allevamenti di bufale e nelle filiere agricole che alimentano i supermercati italiani ed europei.
Era stato reclutato attraverso il sistema mafioso del caporalato, lavorava in nero, era schiavizzato. E quando il suo corpo si è spezzato, è stato semplicemente scaricato davanti a un ospedale.
Secondo diverse ricostruzioni, Neeraj avrebbe evitato di indicare il nome dell’azienda per paura di ritorsioni contro i familiari ancora impiegati lì, un dettaglio che racconta più di qualsiasi indagine, terrore, ricatto, silenzio forzato.
Morire a 36 anni con le gambe marce per sostanze tossiche non è un incidente, è il risultato diretto e brutale di un sistema che considera i braccianti stranieri strumenti usa e getta, carne da lavoro, pedine sacrificabili per abbassare i costi e riempire gli scaffali dei supermercati.
C’è anche un’altra verità che non si può ignorare. Questo sistema regge perché colpisce soprattutto lavoratori stranieri, invisibili, ricattabili, facilmente sostituibili. Se fosse successo a un lavoratore italiano, con diritti, tutele e voce pubblica, la reazione sarebbe stata diversa, immediata, indignata. Ma quando a morire è un bracciante migrante, senza volto e senza potere, il silenzio diventa la risposta più comoda.
Questa non è solo una tragedia del lavoro. È sfruttamento strutturale, è violenza sistemica, è razzismo economico. È successo qui, in Italia, nel cuore della nostra filiera alimentare. Ed è una responsabilità collettiva.

La nave Arctic Sunrise di Greenpeace garantisce il supporto tecnico. Destinazione Gaza, per sfidare il blocco navale israeliano. La risposta della Commissione europea arriva il 27 aprile a Bruxelles. La portavoce Eva Hrncirova usa una formula che merita lettura: «Pur rispettando l'impegno umanitario di tutte le persone a bordo della Flotilla, scoraggiamo questo tipo di consegne perché mettono a rischio la sicurezza dei partecipanti». Il diritto di navigazione in acque internazionali va rispettato. La Commissione chiede «costantemente un accesso senza ostacoli» per gli aiuti a Gaza. Si tratta di contraddizione strutturale. Bruxelles vuole accesso senza ostacoli e scoraggia l'unica azione civile che tenta di forzare quell'ostacolo. Il blocco navale israeliano non viene nominato come problema: il problema, nella formula ufficiale, sono i rischi per i partecipanti. La sicurezza di chi sfida il blocco, non il blocco. Questa è la grammatica diplomatica europea applicata a Gaza: solidarietà all'intenzione, scoraggiamento dell'azione, rinvio al dialogo con lo Stato che impone il blocco. Una formula che non produce pressione né accesso. Il carico dell'ong Music for Peace per la missione precedente è bloccato in Giordania da sei mesi per veto israeliano. Il 27 aprile, mentre la Flotilla naviga verso la Grecia, le forze israeliane uccidono quattro palestinesi nella Striscia: due uomini al Kuwait Roundabout a Gaza City, uno vicino alla moschea Saqqa, una donna quarantenne a Khan Younis. Lo riportano gli ospedali Shifa e Nasser. Dall'ottobre 2025, secondo OCHA, i morti nel cessate il fuoco sono già 786: 226 bambini, 179 donne.
