Un giorno tutti diranno di essere stati contro di Omar El Akkad
Il 25 ottobre 2023, dopo tre settimane di devastanti bombardamenti su Gaza, Omar El Akkad pubblica in rete queste parole: "Un giorno, quando sarà sicuro, quando non ci sarà alcun rischio personale nel chiamare le cose con il loro nome, quando sarà troppo tardi per ritenere qualcuno responsabile, tutti diranno di essere stati contro."
Il post viene visualizzato più di dieci milioni di volte. La sua veemente denuncia dell’ipocrisia dell’Occidente dinanzi al genocidio di Gaza, del tradimento della sua promessa di libertà e giustizia per tutti, suscita un’eco enorme.
Un giorno tutti diranno di essere stati contro, il libro che El Akkad decide poi di scrivere dopo la morte di migliaia di donne e bambini nella striscia, è la cronaca di quella promessa tradita, il resoconto della fine dell’idea che regole e principi, le “verità manifeste” della democrazia occidentale, servano davvero a combattere il male e non a preservare il potere.
Se il male, infatti, non è semplicemente muovere guerra contro un nemico, ma annientare un popolo intero riducendolo a nuda vita priva di ogni dignità e pietà umane, Gaza è oggi uno dei nomi per designare il suo irrompere nel mondo, il nome di un genocidio imperdonabile sotto ogni riguardo.
Disgusto o rabbia dinanzi a un simile evento non hanno senso in questo libro crudo, doloroso e vulnerabile, nutrito dalla certezza che vi saranno sempre esseri umani ritenuti non degni della promessa di libertà, non soltanto arabi o musulmani o immigrati, ma chiunque non rientri nella terra del privilegio chiamata Occidente. Nelle sue pagine, l’unica possibile risposta sta in una rottura totale con il credo dell’Occidente. La stessa rottura che risuona in ogni parte del pianeta, nelle strade delle grandi città, nei campus universitari, nelle scuole. E che, nella scrittura lucida di El Akkad, capace di mescolare racconti toccanti con spietate considerazioni sul linguaggio dei media occidentali, trova la sua più formidabile eco.
